Subjectivity requires very little thought - all that matters is who screams the loudest on a particular issue.
Like you, I have avoided watching certain sports during the Olympics (skating being the best example) because of the judging, which is COMPLETELY subjective. I have been watching curling which does not have anything subjective (unless you count when they have to measure close stones, and even then there is science involved).
We all need to stop and think before we react to any issues. At least then our reasoning would be much less emotional and therefore more objective.

Kudos to you and your staff @ NC8 for the fine job you did covering the explosion and the way you handled the reporting of Ray's passing. It must have been very difficult not to let the emotions come pouring out for one of your own.
My sympathies to all of you, Erik's NC8 family, over ray's loss.

It's interesting - the thing that seemingly got the LEAST amount of attention yesterday is the thing that makes me want to own an iPad: the iBook app/store.

There are books I want to read (the one Steve demoed - Ted Kennedy's - is among them), but I end up being too lazy to go out and buy them.

The iPod got me listening to more music. This thing just might have the same effect on my enjoyment of the written word...

Jim,

I think the price point guesses came from too many different sources to be just Apple trying to manipulate the story. I think with a base laptop at $999 and the high end iPod at $400, they tried to put this device right between those points.

The replication question is sort of like asking do you need another model in a car company's line. All of them replicate the basic transport functions, the differences are in form and features. If you already have a smartphone and laptop, do you need an iPad? Probably not.

But the idea of having a large screen web/media/email device that would fit in my briefcase would seriously get me to think about leaving my laptop behind a lot of the time. And it would be better than a laptop for my Mom and a whole lot of people like her.

Assuming of course, the thing is as impressive in person as it is "in the virtual showroom."

As always "your mileage may vary..."

Apple probably started the $999 price-point rumor so that the $499/$599/$699 cost (depending on memory) would seem like a bargain by comparison. (Ever think you'd hear people being excited about the prospect of only paying $2 a gallon for gas? Everything's relative.)

A 3rd device that primarily replicates some functions of the existing two? They won't be getting my money.
