One More Thing

June 9th, 2008 · No Comments · Tech I Trust

I was really hoping that at the same event that Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the new generation of iPhones (see my bloated post about that below), he would once again end his instructional session on how to give a great Powerpoint…er, rather Keynote…presentation with the now near trademark moment of saying “Oh, and there’s one more thing…”

Those words have proceeded the announcement of the coolest technology Apple has ever rolled out. And today in San Francisco…they never came.

He didn’t say them and thus did not introduce a new model of my beloved MacBook Pro that I was really hoping for. Or a new Macbook Air with a bigger hard drive that might make me think about lightening the load in my briefcase. Or a new iPod. Or at least…something.

But since it didn’t happen, because apparently Steve thought delivering an iPhone for the masses for under 200 bucks was more than enough for one keynote speech. (See here)

So it is left to me, on the heels of hitting the save button on my previous entry here to say it.

Oh, and there’s just one more thing…about the iPhone. And I wish that I had written it.

Because as soon as I read it on John Gruber’s excellent blog “Daring Fireball”, I was jealous as hell. Because he is right as rain, as my Dad used to say. Nailed it in one sentence.

Because it’s not about the hardware. There will probably be a new iPhone next year. And the year after that.

Gruber’s take: “The Platform is the story.”

He is absolutely right about the platform. It was with the iPod. It’s become that with the Mac. And it’s going to become that with the iPhone.
